兰卡斯特大学最初的学科包括商科、自然科学和人文学科，其中重点是现代语言学，之后的学科则侧重于社会科学和工程技术领域。 最初成立了四所生活学院分别是 Bowland、Lonsdale、Cartmel和County，到1990年又陆续增加了五所生活学院，分别是 Furness 、Fylde、Pendle 、Grizedale 和 Graduate。兰卡斯特大学在建立实体建筑和基础设施方面，花费了大量的时间和精力。进入新世纪后，兰卡斯特大学在亚历山德拉公园扩建了学生公寓，使所有的新生都可以拥有自己的房间，并从此喜欢上了住校。
