  Requirements for Admission

  A Bachelors degree in CS is expected but applicants who have majored in another field and minored in CS will be fully considered. Applicants must have a proven record of excellence as an undergraduate grader/TA in a computer science course. Experience as an undergraduate researcher is highly recommended.

  The Application

  Applications are due February 1 for a Fall Semester start. An application consists of (a) transcripts of all college-level work, (b) three letters of recommendation including at least one that addresses expository skills and the ability to work in a classroom setting, and (c) an essay that explains how the degree program and the anticipated thesis area resonates with career plans. Non-native English speakers are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS. TOEFL scores on the Writing, Listening, and Reading components must be 24 or higher and 28 or higher for the Speaking component. IELTS scores must be 7.0 or higher.

  Our MS program is designed for students with a strong background in computer science. This includes education in algorithms, computer systems, programming languages, and theory. Students lacking in one or two of these areas, but who have an otherwise strong background in computer science, may be admitted with prerequisite courses.

  While we do not have a minimum GPA requirement, we recommend that applicants have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher (based on a 4.0 scale).

  We do not have minimum required GRE scores. As a rule of thumb, the average percentiles of our admitted students are 60% for Verbal and 80% for Quantitative.

  Criteria

  Our recommendation for admission is in general based on a combination of the following criteria: CS course background and major GPA, class rank, letters of recommendation, your statement of purpose, research experience, publications, and English Proficiency. Most of the successful applicants have major and cumulative GPAs above 3.5/4.0, 8.5/10.0 or 85/100. We take the quality of the institution into consideration. PhD applicants are expected to show potential for independent research. GRE is NOT required.

  Applicants must have received a four-year bachelor's or equivalent degree before the term they intend to enroll into our program.

  Most applicants have a degree in computer science. However, we also consider applicants from other fields with suitable backgrounds.

  Applicants who begin a graduate program in computer science at another institution should complete at least a year in that program before applying to us. If the program is a master's program, we normally require completion of the program before registration at Purdue.

  Key Requirements

  Graduate students are expected to learn on their own whatever programming languages may be needed for the courses they take.

  Understanding of the foundational concepts of computer science.

  Familiarity with data structures and their implementations in different languages.

  An understanding of computer architecture, compilers, the analysis of algorithms, operating systems, distributed systems, networks, and programming languages.

  Knowledge of mathematics through differential equations, linear and matrix algebra, and numerical methods. Proficiency in a programming language such as Java, C, or C++.

  Applicants interested in the joint master's program with statistics, should also have:
